Art with Heart
Family Activities

Looking for easy ways to connect as a family? Each month’s activity gives you a fun idea you can try at home, along with a place to share a photo of what you created together.

JANUARY

Family Activity: The Wish Jar

  1. Find a jar, cup, or container you already have at home.

  2. Give each family member a few small slips of paper.

  3. Write down one hope, dream, or goal for the year — it can be meaningful or totally silly.

  4. Decorate the jar together using markers, stickers, ribbon, or anything you have.

  5. Add all your wishes to the jar and place it somewhere special.

  6. Check back on your wishes later in the year to see how things are going.

FEBRUARY

Family Activity: Kindness Notes

  1. Cut out several paper hearts in any size or color you like.

  2. On each heart, write a kind message, appreciation, or drawing for someone.

  3. Choose who you want to brighten — family members, neighbors, teachers, or friends.

  4. Hide the hearts around your home for your family to find, or deliver them to others.

  5. Talk about how giving kindness can feel just as good as receiving it.

MARCH

Family Activity: Signs of Spring Walk

  1. Take a short family walk around your neighborhood or a nearby park.

  2. Look closely for early signs of spring: buds, birds, puddles, greenery, or changing light.

  3. Try to find at least five signs together and name them as you walk.

  4. Choose one small natural item (like a stone, leaf, or pinecone) to bring home.

  5. Talk about how nature changes from winter to spring.

APRIL

Family Activity: Rainbow Hunt & Craft

  1. Look around your home for small items in each color of the rainbow.

  2. Line them up in rainbow order — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.

  3. Use your item rainbow as inspiration to draw, paint, or color your own rainbow artwork.

  4. Display your rainbow somewhere your family can enjoy it.

  5. Talk about favorite colors and how they appear in nature.

MAY

Family Activity: Plant Something Together

  1. Choose something easy to grow: herbs, marigolds, beans, or sunflowers.

  2. Fill small cups or a pot with soil and plant your seeds.

  3. Write names on the cups and decide when each plant should be watered.

  4. Place them near a sunny window and check on them each day.

  5. Watch for the first tiny sprout and celebrate when it appears.

JUNE

Family Activity: Pride Kindness Chain

  1. Cut colorful paper into strips (construction paper works great).

  2. On each strip, write something kind: an appreciation, a compliment, or an uplifting word.

  3. Loop each strip into a circle and staple or tape them together to form a chain.

  4. Hang your kindness chain somewhere visible — a doorframe, window, or wall.

  5. Add new links throughout the month as more kind thoughts come to mind.

JULY

Family Activity: Picnic Prep

  1. Gather simple foods your family enjoys: fruit, sandwiches, snacks, or water bottles.

  2. Let kids help wash fruit, assemble sandwiches, or pack the bag.

  3. Choose a spot — a park, backyard, living room floor, or porch.

  4. Spread out a blanket and enjoy your picnic together.

  5. Spend a few minutes noticing sounds, smells, and favorite foods.

AUGUST

Family Activity: End-of-Summer Adventure Bingo

  1. Draw a 3×3 or 4×4 grid on a piece of paper.

  2. Fill each square with simple activities: chalk art, reading outside, new fruit, park visit, sunset watch, bird spotting, etc.

  3. Let kids help choose the activities — the sillier, the better.

  4. Complete as many squares as you can over the month.

  5. Celebrate when your family gets “BINGO,” or just see how many squares you can fill.

SEPTEMBER

Family Activity: Backpack Launch Pad

  1. Choose one spot in your home where school items will live — a hook, shelf, or corner.

  2. Create a simple checklist: backpack, folder, water bottle, shoes, or anything your child needs.

  3. Practice a quick 2-minute nightly routine of packing things for the next day.

  4. Encourage your child to check off each item before bedtime.

  5. Enjoy smoother mornings with less rushing.

OCTOBER

Family Activity: Family Spooky (or Silly) Tale

  1. Sit together and start a story with one sentence.

  2. Let each family member add the next sentence — spooky, funny, or completely ridiculous.

  3. Keep going until your story feels finished.

  4. Draw or color one favorite scene from the story.

  5. Read the final story together and enjoy the laughs.

NOVEMBER

Family Activity: Gratitude Leaves

  1. Cut paper leaves in fall colors — red, orange, yellow, and brown.

  2. Write or draw something you’re thankful for on each leaf.

  3. Tape the leaves to a window, wall, or door to create a family “gratitude tree.”

  4. Add new leaves throughout the month as more ideas come up.

  5. Take a moment to read the leaves together at the end of the month.

  4. Deliver your Warm Wishes Basket together and brighten someone’s day.

  5. Talk afterward about how it felt to give and connect.
